This is a collection from Rosie Flores' three albums for Hightone Records. It is harder edged, more varied country than you're likely to find on a dozen CDs. To my taste, the first two cuts are the least interesting, mid-tempo generic country rockers that sound like Rosie's bid to get something, anything, played on the hundreds of Big Country 103, Today's Country pablum stations across the country. She should never have bothered, for it's when she revs up her own musical signatures that Bandera Highway becomes a superb collection. West Texas Plains is a sweet ballad of loneliness in big, empty spaces. Love and Danger, a duet with Joe Ely, describes a couple trying to resurrect the excitement of just being together. It is edgy with longing and a sense of last chance. Bandera Highway is a unsentimental but affectionate return-home-from-the-road-and-leave-again song. Rockabilly and two-step kick in with two of the album's best songs, Honky Tonk Moon and His Rockin' Little Angel, including backing vocals from that eternal bad girl Wanda Jackson. You also get Texas blues in Blues Keep Callin and Butch Hancock's Boxcars. It all winds up with a song that channels the lovely harmonies of old Everly Brothers singles from the late 50s and early 60s, Don't Let Our Love Die. Excellent playing throughout too, including some honky tonk keyboards and plenty of pedal steel.



An oddity -- on my copy of the CD at least, the track listing is out of order for Boxcars and Rockin' Little Angel.



Aside from her considerable vocal and guitar talents, Flores wrote or co-wrote many of the songs here. She's got a distinctive and impressive niche, deserves much wider recognition, and with Bandera Highway shows why.

Ok, so, I was so excited to listen to this CD I almost peed my pants! Im a huge DM fan, and thought this would be great....only it wasn't so great. I Feel You, Policy of Truth, and It's No Good had no vocals...hello? That's like the best part of the songs! Everything Counts ( one of my faves ) was made into an R&B song! What??!!?? Black Celebration sung by a Whitney Houston-y type voice! No Way!! Yes, way!! World In My Eyes....I can't even describe it..just garbage!! The best versions are Flux's People Are People and Transcient's Master And Servant. My opinion....don't waste the dough and just go listen to the real Depeche Mode!! Two thumbs down!!!

All the pairs I've ordered have arrived scratch-free .. in excellent condition. I have many pairs of these glasses in various strengths and colors for different purposes, reading, needlework, computerwork, etc. I like that they are light and are wider than normal bifocals. They are small and the case is easy to tuck into a bag, purse, throw into the car, a pocket, etc. They are not made of metal and I have stepped on a pair and found they don't like that ... pretty much don't go back into shape afterwards, so the reviews indicating they are not as sturdy as perhaps they would have preferred, is valid ... and for those types of activities where glasses need to be unbreakable, buy something else. These glasses are comfortable and the color selection is very nice and if you read reviews under different colors there are a wide variety of opinions, so likely if your needs match those who rate low, you'll select something else, otherwise, these will likely be a good choice.

Very loose-fitting, hard to keep aligned on one's nose for reading (slippy and very wide nose bridge with no clips or other adjustment). Keeping them in proper position to focus is critical with reading glasses, of course! Probably great if they fit you - horrible if you have the problems I had. The case is also -- well, not much, unlined, likely to scratch glasses if you don't put them in perfectly, and not loose enough to slide glasses in easily (more "breakage potential").



Yes, they are very lightweight - so lightweight I feared breaking them too easily. Also note: ordered two pairs (green and purple), both arrived with scratched lenses -- so examine carefully when you get them.



Alternate products are the same company's readers in the fun "prints" and with rhinestones -- far sturdier and better-fitting frames, useful spring hinges (particularly great if you push them up on your head as I sometimes do!) They are considerably superior in "build", fit and overall fashionable appearance (unless, of course, you're going for a more "invisible" look...!) and worth the extra couple of dollars per pair.
