"Fifth time is a charm.....Paul Hardcastle impresses again!" 2009-06-22
By DJ Come of Age (Germany/France/USA)
I've followed Paul Hardcastle's music and career for over twenty years now. I was hooked on "Rainforest" years ago. Long before I got my first turntables, I had bought two copies of this timeless vinyl released on Profile Records. That was back in 1986 and since then, Mr. Hardcastle has cornered the smooth jazz community with his Jazzmasters and Hardcastle series. "Hardcastle 5" is just like it's predecessors, smooth, relaxing, calm, and still unique in it's own way. The smooth jazz genre seems to serve a niche market these days. Depending on how it's classified, you may very well hear one of these gems ensconced within the R&B or Soul playlist.

I am thoroughly enjoying this album. My review is like most others, in high regard of his work. So what tracks should you indulge in? In my opinion, there are three that you can't escape: Marimba, Return of the Rainman, and Don't You Know (part 2). If you love smooth jazz instrumentals, soft melody, and music to relax too, then give these songs their rightful place in your media player.

On a side note, there is a new website chronicling the life and career of Mr. Hardcastle. He's one of the few performers who doesn't crave the spotlight. It's still nice to know more about the author of such wonderful music, he has given us more than his share over the years. Here's hope that he gives us much more in the years to come.

 "Electronica? Jazz...yes." 2009-03-07
By Travis R. Canady (College Park, GA)
For some reason, the internet calls this one Electronica. I feel it is very much Smooth Jazz. I follow some of Paul Hardcastle, but have decided that I must get the rest of the Jazzmasters series and his numbered CD...I have HARDCASTLE III and IV..now this 5. I think it rivals III...great.

 "NOTHING SPECIAL...." 2009-02-09
By REENO (NYC)
I know I'm in the minority here...but this cd (as well as most of his smooth jazz efforts) is just a bit lackluster.

I strongly prefer his early, funkier/danceable tracks like "Rainforest", "Panic", "Guilty", "Don't waste my time", "Better", and many others from the early/mid 80's.

I do not mean to upset any hardcore hardcastle/smooth jazz fans, but c'mon people! This smoother material isn't exciting or funky like the older stuff.

 "So love this album" 2009-01-18
By Susannah (E.Falmouth, MA United States)
If you're into eclectic variety of smooth jazz and fusion with a soft taste of electronica, then this is the album for you. It's really upbeat and the style of Paul Hardcastle will knock you off your feet wth awesome grooves. My personal favorite on this album is, 'Constellation of Dreams' which is a fluid song with syncopated rhythms and electronica.

 "Solid Hardcastle" 2009-01-06
By R. J. Beck
Another winner for those who like Hardcastle & the Jazzmasters. In typical fashion, there are some standouts and no bad cuts. Overall a very consistent effort of good, upbeat smooth jazz fusion. Great CD for driving or just chilling out.
