Dougie MacLean is not only Scotland's favorite singer-songwriter--his song "Caledonia" is so popular it's considered the unofficial Scottish national anthem--he is also a talented composer of instrumental music as well. Perthshire Amber, a four-movement suite composed to honor his native county, is his most ambitious, and successful, composition yet. MacLean and his arranger and cellist Kevin McCrae have created a beautifully evocative piece of music that effectively blends the timbres of folk instruments like the tin whistle, guitar, bouzouki, and bagpipes with a small classical string ensemble. MacLean may be the leader of the group, but it's fiddler Pete Clark and tin whistler-piper Graham Mulholland who bring the music to life with their sensitive playing. The CD also includes three instrumentals taken from previous releases and a video of the recording session and scenic views of Perthshire, viewable on computers that can play CD-ROMs. --Michael Simmons

 "Homecoming 2009" 2009-04-14
By Sean William Menzies
I've owned this cd for several years now and have enjoyed it. Then my brother and I fulfilled a childhood dream by visiting our ancestral Castle Menzies last month. As we approached the castle, Dougie's music played in my memory and the experience of not only being there, but of visiting Aberfeldy and Weem, made me understand the richer, deeper layers to this wonderful suite he and his group have put together.

As soon as I got home, I listened again to Perthshire Amber and it brought the feel and smell of the land back, the sounds inside Castle Menzies, and the haunting surrounding forest. I remember leaning in the north east turret of the castle and looking out the window, up into the snowy Highlands, and the sense that some of my ancestors may have seen the same view overwhelmed me.

Thanks to Dougie MacLean, my memories have a soundtrack.

I received this as a gift and at first I was disappointed because it was all instrumental, however after listening to it for awhile, I absolutely love it.

 "Dougie's finest" 2009-01-24
By E. J. Garst (Virginia)
This was the first of many Dougie MacLean cd's that i have purchased and it remains my all time favorite. Happened to be reading a book about medieval Wales at the time and this music so enhanced my reading experience that I wrote the author of THE FOOL'S TALE, screenwriter Nicole Galland, and suggested she consider recommending this music as the soundtrack, in the event that her book is ever adapted for screen. My favorite is the hauntingly beautiful Mr & Mrs MacLean of Snaigow and can always elicit tears from me....

"Be Prepared for a Mystic Journey !!! Absolutely enthralling!" 2004-07-06
By NG (USA)
Iam very much into Newage, Alternative and electronica .. and this is probably one of the best in the genre. The completeness and wholesome nature of the music brings one closer to nature and bond with elements of nature we are composed of. The hues of emotions it represents paints a vivid picture thats hard to erase. It was only after a while that I realized it also describes the beauty of scottish highlands, plains and some of its cultural aspects.. which made me like it even more.
Overall.. I would definitely recommend anyone to buy it!

 "Simply Incredible" 2003-09-02
By Paula (Seattle, WA USA)
I have a few other CDs by Dougie MacLean and, while the other's are fantastic, Perthshire Amber is BRILLIANT! It touched me to my very core. Each movement brings a different emotion - sweet and soothing, foot-stampingly joyous, melancholy and haunting. It is definitely a treat for the ears!
