"Delightfully Silly addition to Slayers" 2004-01-19
By J. Miller (Portland, OR)
This book contains the Slayers Special micro-episodes 15-21. Other than the last episode being a bit forced with the pseudo-introduction of Amelia, the writing is well above-par for Lina and Naga (with a delightful Pink Floyd reference at the end of episode 18, ta'boot). It's properly formatted manga -- that is, backwards, but you'll get used to it -- and the artwork is generally much better than the misformatted "Slayers -- Super Explosive..." series (which was the basis for the TV series and therefore a bit boring to those of us who know the series).

So if you like to read enjoyably silly manga, this is certainly a worthy addition to the Slayers franchise.

 "Finally, no plastic!" 2009-12-31
By A. Rayburn (Aspen, CO)
Finally!! After dozens of hours of searching, an electric tea kettle with no plastic parts inside! There is one plastic piece, a cap, inside, but it's easy to remove and with a little attention when you fill it up it's not a problem. The kettle heats quickly, and though it doesn't shut off immediately upon boiling (just a few seconds after), that possible flaw is more than made up for by the plastic-freeness! We use this up to a dozen times a day and it's such a treat. I heat water up in this, then pour it into a pot for cooking - much faster than my gas stove! I make tea, my husband french-press coffee, and we even heat up just enough water to re-heat noodles and turkey-dogs for our son - almost as fast and probably healthier than the microwave. A major time and money saver. Thank you Chef's Choice!

 "Hot Water Fast" 2009-12-30
By Erik B. Kraft (Fallbrook, CA USA)
This is the second Chef's Choice kettle we have owned. The first one finally gave out after 5 years of daily use. My wife loved it so much that she asked for a second one for Christmas. Pros: heats water fast, turns off automatically, and is easy to fill from the tap. Cons: The only negative I can think of is that we can't fill it from the water dispensor on the fridge because of the shape of the kettle.

"Very Handy in the Kitchen" 2009-12-26
By M. Wilson (Seattle)
I love my new water kettle. I wanted it for making coffee in the morning, but I use it whenever I cook. It is much faster than waiting for water to boil on the stove. And it looks good in my kitchen. I had the same one one for three years previously and was always satisfied with it.

By D.J. Rosebaugh (Texas)
I've had this kettle for nearly 2 years (Christmas of 2007), and it's one of the best gifts. It heats fast, and pours without dripping. We've used it almost daily and it's as good today as it was new. I highly recommend it.

"This CD is easily recommended to fans of 1920s jazz" 2000-09-25
By roarin20sGuy
AMG EXPERT REVIEW: Relatively little music was recorded in New Orleans during the 1920s and what does exist was due to "field trips" taken by staff members of Victor, Columbia, Brunswick and Okeh. This valuable CD (released by a small British label) features a set by Louis Dumaine's Jazzola Eight, both instrumentally and backing singers Genevieve Davis and Ann Cook. In addition, there are excellent overlapping groups headed by pianist Johnnie Miller and drummer Monk Hazel that feature trumpeter Sharkey Bonano and clarinetist Sidney Arodin and are inspired a bit by The New Orleans Rhythm Kings. However the main reason to pick up this disc is to acquire the four songs (plus two alternate takes) performed by The Jones-Collins Astoria Hot Eight, a legendary band featuring trumpeter Lee Collins in 1920 that ranks with the hottest groups of the period. This CD is easily recommended to fans of 1920s jazz. - Scott Yanow

After running out of the Abyssine Moisturizer I decided to try out this Cryste Marine Firming Cream. I was greatly disappointed I would definitely have preferred spending just a little more for the Abyssine Moisturizer. This cream didn't have the effect of covering up the fine lines around the mouth and I just didn't feel the seem moisture when applying my foundation. So, thumbs down to this cream :( But, a die-hard Kiehls Customer :)

 "Sco - World's greatest guitarist?" 2003-12-10
By Jan P. Dennis (Monument, CO USA)
I approached this disc with a wee bit of trepidation. I didn't want just some old jazz master's hard-bop/post-bop reading of standards. And with the first cut, that's what I thought I was in for.

But from Soc's first notes on the second offering, "That Old Feeling," we're in some kind of ur-jazz guitar territory. How does he do it? Here, he sticks to traditional solid-body sound (from a mere sonic standpoint, it could be anyone from Herb Ellis to Barney Kessel to Jimmy Bruno to Bruce Forman), but there's some impossibly deep Sco signature thing happening here that lifts the proceedings out of mere boppish territory into the precincts of pure guitar felicity.

If anyone needed confirmation of Sco's absolute guitar mastery, he need only listen to his amazing playing on Coltrane's brilliant composition, "Afro Blue," where he manages to be both thoroughly blue and thoroughly Afro at the same time. This may be--no, undoubtedly is--Sco's most profound extended guitar statement on disc, as well as one of the greatest guitar performances ever captured--scorching single-note runs, way hip chord voicings, sheer sinuousity throughout. It doesn't hurt to have Dave Holland spinning out a great bass solo, and an inspired Haynes quietly going crazy on his kit. But make no mistake, this is Sco's show. He's in some kind of rhythmic/chord voicing/single-note-run zone. Check out his quickie outro for confirmation.

The next number, "Que Pasa," continues the incredible Afro-Latin vibe and features Joshua Redmond's finest playing on disc. He seems to feed off the excitement laid down by Kenny Barron on piano and Christian McBride on bass. Haynes, by now an old guy, dazzles on drums.

Amazingly, each of these high-powered artists, some of the most heavy weight and important on the jazz scene today, seems completely ready and willing to give it up for Roy Haynes. Once they settle into the fabulous groove staked out by Sco on the second number, everything locks into place.

I've stated elsewhere that I've had it up to here with stale post-bop sessions. And that's why I waited so long to pick this one up--I was scared that that's what I'd be getting. But no. What we have here, instead--and gloriously--is magical transformation of standards into postmodern, entirely hip, fascinating jazz. Set aside all reseverations and pick up on this breathtaking set.

"Very well recorded, produced, and just look at the line-up!" 2003-07-14
By T. Klaase (Orange Park, Florida United States)
The first time I heard Roy Haynes was on Pat Metheny's "Question and Answer" CD and I was transfixed by the sound and style of the drums. Haynes really knows how to tune and record his set - and his new album is no disappointment. The sound quality is stellar and the standards are executed wonderfully by an all star line-up. Redman's blistering sax on the very first track is just mind-numbing. Scofield has been excellent on all of his latest efforts, Scolohofo, Up all Night, and now this! Dave Holland and McBride are loud in the mix and on the money the whole time.

This is one of those recordings that's easier and easier to listen too. ...and Roy's drum sound - stop the press and get into the moment!

 "interesting set of standards" 2003-05-30
By Rob Watkins (Augusta, Georgia United States)
mr. haynes continues to be a part of jazz's elder statesmen making tremendous performances of late (see also max roach/clark terry's "friendship" or keith jarrett's "up for it.")this collection of standards recorded by the japanese 88 label and picked up by columbia is a superb album. the ensemble swings with abandon and finds new twists and turns in very familiar tunes. mr. haynes leads the charge laying down a consistent groove on drums. he shows again and again how these songs are love letters, not only in their own content, but in the message the band conveys to the listener. this is well worth having.

This CD, recorded at Pittsburgh's Manchester Craftsman's Guild in 2001, is a reunion of stellar Dizzy Gillespie sidemen and a tribute to his music. This big band features trumpeters Claudio Roditi and Terrell Stafford, and features Gillespie's former protégé Jon Faddis as conductor. The ensemble includes tenor saxmen Jimmy Heath and James Moody and trombonist Slide Hampton, with former young lions Renee Rosnes and alto saxophonist Antonio Hart. Fresh reads of Gillespie-associated compositions and standards are highlighted, from the Afro-tinged "A Night in Tunisia" to the Benny Golson ballad, "I Remember Clifford." "Jessica's Day" by Quincy Jones and the fiery labyrinthine, Gillespie-penned title track, along with Thelonious Monk's "Round Midnight," also show that Dizzy Gillespie's music and legacy will live on in this century. --Eugene Holley Jr.

"As good as it gets...without the Master" 2003-09-09
By (Pittsburgh, Pa. United States)
I was present for this recording as well, in the intimate confines of the Manchester Craftsmen's Guild in Pittsburgh, and it was a BLAST. Jon Faddis did a great job of 'carrying on' for the late Master...and just seeing the reed section assembled there that night - all of whom were thoughouly enjoying themselves...Jimmy Heath in particular, who never stopped grinning the whole night -Moody, Heath, Wess, Smulyan, and Hart, along with greats Slide Hampton, Pittsburgher Jay Ashby, and his brother Marty on guitar, Claudio Roditi, Terrell Stafford, and the suprise of the night for myself and many others, the incredible piano playing of Renee Rosnes, who sparkled. Drummer Dennis Makrel did not disappoint, nor did percussionist "Duke" either! Being there was a real trip, I must say, but somehow that magic didn't quite translate onto this CD, in my opinion. Still, this is a swinging, talented band, and Jon Faddis was as good as anyone can be stepping into the over-sized shoes of Diz. For the real deal, Live also, I would suggest Dizzy's "Live at Newport 1957". Although these arrangements are tight and grooving, some are nearly carbon copies of those Diz gems at Newport; like "I Remember Clifford", and "Night In Tunisia".

This group sure hasn`t lost any of the drive or spirit of Dizzy`s bands. All the trumpet men are outstanding and powerful. A couple of them even have chops reminiscent of Dizzy himself. One thing else I do have to say though; there was only one DIZZY GILLESPIE. But take my word, this is a great band with some outstanding trumpet players.

 "I was there!" 2003-02-07
By Robert R. Muder (Pittsburgh, PA USA)
I had the distinct pleasure of being at this concert. It was recorded at the Manchester Craftsman's Guild, a small and acoustically excellent concert hall in Pittsburgh. The album does justice to what was one of the 3 or 4 best live jazz performances I have ever attended. John Faddis has turned into a first rate orchestra leader, and gets a chance to wail once in a while. The assembled stars are all in good form. Renee Rosnes, with whom I was not previously familiar, was a revelation.
